Outcome based learning system provides expanded opportunities for the Students by following a student-centered learning approach. It has a clear goal to impact their lives positively committing to excellence & innovation.
Vimala College (Autonomous) in association with ipsr solutions limited organized a one-week FDP- on Outcome Based Education starting from September 17th to September 23rd. This event was conducted under the UGC NAAC Paramarsh Scheme.
A one-week interesting Faculty Development Programme was organized on outcome-based teaching and learning backed by Hands-on activities and assessments through a learning management portal (LMS).
The objective of this FDP was to nurture the philosophy of Outcome Base Education (OBE) and to build the capacity of the young Faculty Members / Heads of department / Principal so as to facilitate its institutionalization in the Teaching-Learning System and other Academic Processes of the Institution.
The participants were faculty members from Vimala college and also from its 5 mentee colleges – Sahrdaya college, Kodakara, Yuvakshetra college, Ezhakkad, Government college, Ollur, Don Bosco College, Mannuthy, and Chetana College, Thrissur.
The online one-week Faculty Development Program on Outcome Based Education commenced on September 17th, at 3 pm, with an inaugural ceremony in the presence of Dr. Mendus Jacob, CEO – ipsr solutions limited (Resource person), Dr. Beena Jose – Principal – Vimala College, Dr. Beena TL – Vice-Principal – Vimala College, Dr. Sunil Job K.A – Chief of Academic Solutions – IPSR (Resource person) and other dignitaries. Followed by the Learning Domains, an FDP Session had taken place and it was by Dr. Sunil Job K.A, Chief of Academic Solutions – IPSR, Former College Principal and an OBE Specialist, a Blogger and Resource person for National conferences, and an academician with 25+ years of experience.
Sessions on OBE which explained objectives of outcome-based education, features of outcome-based education, and types of outcome-based education was conducted on day 2 and Day 3 witnessed Assessment Design and Mapping Outcomes taken by Dr. Sunil Job K.A, Chief of Academic Solutions – IPSR, Former College Principal and an OBE Specialist, Blogger and Resource person for National conferences
The first session was taken by Dr. Mendus Jacob on Calculation of Attainment in OBE followed by OBE Analytics Reports and Tools Session by Mr. Sijo Thomas, MCA, MPhil, Ph. D Scholar, Consultant Software Architect, Professional with 10+ years of experience in the Education and IT Industry Expertise in developing Academic Solution products implementing cutting edge technologies like Machine Learning and AI
OBE – the underlying threads session was taken by Mr. Suresh Namboothiri, Mr. Suresh Namboothiri, M.Tech, MBA, Founder member of the education innovation company – Espoir Technologies Product development specialist with 30+ years of experience, Sought after interviewer for senior positions of leading companies, Former COO, Tata Motors and Part of the team that developed India’s first car – Tata Indica.
On the last day of the one-week FDP, a concluding session was taken by Dr. Mendus Jacob on Outcome Based Education, Academic Bank of credit (ABC) followed by the Valedictory Programme with a welcome note by Dr. Jerrin Paul (Paramarsh Team Member), and Valedictory address by Dr. Malini K.A (Vice Principal ) and vote of thanks proposed by Dr. Dhanya Johnson ( IQAC Coordinator)
This outcome-based learning FDP also witnessed usage of Mentimeter Polls which simultaneously resulted in a good outcome. One interesting question raised by Dr. Mendus Jacob was; “Which are most informative tasks/ resources included in FDP? answered by the experts in the form of the word Art.
Before the session started on the topic of OBE, people were not having much clarity about OBE. The below bar chart image represents a Mentimeter poll based on the topic “How proficient are you in OBE?”
By the end of the FDP Sessions more than half of the respondents, which means 28% of them had a piece of good knowledge on OBE, 56% of the respondents were on moderate knowledge, 6% of the respondents were still new to OBE and the last 11% of the respondents were experts in OBE. This Faculty development program made the faculties understand the benefits of outcome-based education.
Also using Padlet, an online tool that is best to make a lively interaction, a question was asked by Dr. Mendus Jacob sir to the participants to list out few qualities of teachers, and there was a good response. Padlet results
Outcome-based teaching not only does it adapt to a learner’s strengths and weaknesses, but also provides sufficient time to attain proficiency and fluency in the subject matter. Outcome-based learning objectives will be standing at the threshold of a new world, one where students will be required to navigate an ever-changing global landscape.
